The Exams: What It Takes to Pass the National and Florida Licensing Tests
Earning a surveying degree and gaining field experience are only part of the journey toward becoming licensed. Before surveyors can legally practice on their own, they must pass a series of demanding national and state examinations designed to test both technical knowledge and professional judgment. These tests are rigorous and comprehensive—designed to ensure only the most qualified candidates enter the profession.
The first major step is the Fundamentals of Surveying (FS) exam, which covers core surveying principles, mathematics, mapping concepts, and measurement science. After additional experience under a licensed professional, candidates move on to the Principles and Practice of Surveying (PS) exam, which focuses more heavily on real-world application and professional responsibility.
In Florida, candidates must also pass a state-specific exam covering Florida laws, regulations, and surveying standards unique to the state.
All three must be passed to become fully licensed in Florida.
Preparing for these exams often requires months of study. Candidates spend countless hours reviewing legal descriptions, coordinate systems, mapping principles, ethics, and property law. Many participate in study groups or formal review courses to prepare for the level of detail covered on the exams.
These tests are intentionally difficult because licensed surveyors carry significant responsibility. Their work affects property ownership, legal records, and important land-related decisions. The licensing process exists to ensure surveyors have both the technical ability and professional judgment required to handle that responsibility accurately.
For many surveyors, passing these exams represents years of dedication, education, and practical experience finally coming together.
The final step to becoming a licensed surveyor is one of the hardest—but it ensures that every licensed professional has truly earned their title. These exams protect the public by ensuring surveyors are qualified, tested, and accountable.
